Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to identify the common disabilities/impairments that are present in Barangay Concepcion Marikina. Data were collected using the questionnaire/ interview method, from one hundred two (102) households with a population of five hundred sixty eight (568). The researchers, together with the community health workers of the barangay, went on a house-to-house survey with the questionnaire forms and interview guide written in Filipino. The head of the family was initially interviewed to find if there is any disabled/impaired family members. Queries were given and the researchers noted down on the guideline questionnaire items related to the individual's disabilities/impairment. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Data showed that 137 members of the Barangay Concepcion had either single or multiple disabilities/impairments. A total number of 183 disabilities/impairments were identified. Results showed that low back pain, arthritis, lung diseases, fracture, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart diseases, cerebral palsy cerebrovascular accident, and poliomyelitis were the ten most common disabilities/impairments found in Barangay Concepcion Marikina. Recommendations: (1) The Garcia Hospital should develop a treatment protocol and acquire more modalities to facilitate the treatment of the stated disabilities. (2) Health workers should be educated/informed on the benefits and services that the Physical Therapy Department may offer so that they can disseminate the information to the barangay residents. (3) Educational pamphlets and hand-outs should be given to the patients.
