Abstract
The De La Salle University - Health Sciences Campus (DLSU-HSC) which believes and supports the World Health Organization's goal of the "Health for all by the year 2000" and with the accordance with its college mission statement, has tried to establish community-based rehabilitation programs in the province of Cavite. The activity in this research was carried out with the cooperation of the barangay health workers of Caridad, Cavite City, a non-profit organization which offers primary health care to those in need. This descriptive study aimed to educate health care workers on proper back hygiene through a structured, formal training. Self-made questionnaire was distributed to 10 respondents were barangay health workers in Caridad, Cavite City chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires and written in Filipino. Data collected were presented in frequency percentage, mean, and T-test. The researchers found out that prior to the conduct of the training program, majority of the respondents (60%) showed "satisfactorily" performances as manifested by their scores in the pre-test. A marked improvement was noted after the training program was given. All respondents improved their ratings as shown by their scores they obtained from the post-test. Five areas were covered by the training program with regards to low back pain: 1) definition, 2) causes of low back pain, 3) proper body mechanics, 4) proper back hygiene, 5) back exercises. Of the five areas discussed, the topic on the "Definition of the Low Back Pain" showed the most improvement, while on the other hand, least improvement was noted on the topics regarding the causes of low back pain. The researchers were able to conclude from the results and findings of the study that the training program was an effective tool in facilitating the dissemination of information regarding basic physical therapy and rehabilitation techniques on the treatment of low back pain for the BHW's of Caridad, Cavite City as manifested by their performance in the post-test and practical test. The follow-up study is strongly recommended to conduct their research for a longer period of time in order to test the respondents’ abilities regarding what they have learned from the lectures.
