Abstract
Expert on burn rehabilitation agree that an intensive preventive care program must be carried out after the acute stage of thermal burn to avoid the disabling and disfiguring sequelae such as hypertrophic scares and joint and soft tissue contractures. A descriptive study showed that recently discharged burn patients at high risk of developing secondary complication has a low level of knowledge regarding the necessary preventive measures inspite regarding the nesse preventive measures inspite of their confinement in a burn unit with Rehabilitation Medicine services. Data was obtained through questionnaires distributed to nine (9) respondents were thermal burn patients, or their relatives, admitted at JPMMC from February 1 to March 31, 1996 chosen through simple quota sampling. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires and translated into Tagalog. Data were gathered and interpreted using standard deviation and T-test. Based on the findings, patients/ relatives participated in the study, majority of whom where less than 30 years old. With 2-40% deep to full partial thickness burns involving different part of the body. Extremities knowledge of the participants based on their performance in the written compared to 94% in the post test . The topic in which the patients had the least knowledge in the pre-test was a proper positioning of the burned site. The researchers therefore concluded that a structured, formal training program is effective in educating burn patients and their relatives on the necessary preventive care measures. A follow-up study involving a larger group of patients with experts in burn rehabilitation as the trainers is strongly recommended. Such formal training program should be a regular part of the rehabilitation of all admitted burn patients.
