Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to identify the common physical and visual disabilities that are present in Barangay Burol Main, Dasmariñas, Cavite. Barangay Burol is a community bounded in the North by Salitran, in the South by Zone 1 and 4, in the East by Imus River and in the West by San Agustin. Most of the people here are farmers and housewives which may be due to the location of the place which is surrounded mainly by vast agricultural areas. Data were collected using the interview method, from 75 household with a population of 348. The head of the family served as the respondent during interview. The instrument was translated into Tagalog. Data collected were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Data showed that only 16% of the family members included in the study had either single or multiple disabilities. Of the 117 disabilities identified, physical problems ranked number one, followed by visual disabilities. Most of the disabled are in their early adulthood and most common among females. The authors recommend that seminars be conducted in the barangay on the causes and effects of these disabilities. Families of involved individuals should participate during these seminars for total commitment to the whole community program. furthermore, it is recommended that members of the physical therapist, be part of the total Community Based Rehabilitation program.
