Abstract

The DLSU-HSC College of PT with the help of World Health Organization training manual, agreed that a person with difficulty in moving must be given an intensive preventive care to prevent further aggravating conditions such as contracture, pressure sores and immobilization syndromes. The effects of prolonged bed rest are never confined to only one body system. immobilization reduces functional reserve of the musculoskeletal system, resulting in weakness atrophy and poor conditions . This, in turn. will place increase demands on a cardiovascular system that also been negatively influenced , as evidenced by reduce cardiac work capacity and postural hypotension. Since most patient are confined in the bed all the time they are more prone to have all these. Most patients in the Barangay had little knowledge about these conditions so deformities are common if theres no health professional around. This was the reason why the researchers conducted a study aimed to educate Community Health Workers about immobility so they can handle patient safely. Data was obtained through questionnaire distributed to each community health workers. A written pretest was administered to assess pre-training knowledge. The training lasted for three hours through lectures, visual aids and presentation, and demonstration. A patient manual was also given to each health workers during the lecture. Each health workers are given to assess post -training knowledge and skill. A total of 13 female subjects ages 30 to 60 attended the training. Results of the study showed a significant increase in the knowledge of the participants based on their performance in the written pre-test and post-test. The mean score during the pretest exam was 6.7 compared to 13 in the post-test with a total of 15 questions each. An area about stretching was given on the pretest which showed that they are not knowledgeable or informed about it , but based on the post-test exam their scores improved. The researchers therefore concluded that a formal training program is effective in educating community health workers on the necessary preventive measures in immobility.
