Abstract
Post-stroke depression after 6 months to 2 years of onset has been a single problem that is hardly overcome by a stroke patient and its is quite important for a recovery to take place. It is for this reason that the case of 67 y/o married stroke patient. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the post-stroke depression on functional recovery and try to alleviate this problem because this could interfere with an individual's ability to live independently. Patient was re-evaluated and problems sought were residual muscle weakness of (B) UE & LE, (L) shoulder pain, LOM of some joint motions, and partial to total dependence on some aspects of ADL. In this case, effective rehabilitation should take place and should also include emotional, functional retraining and patient education which promotes the highest level of functional independence. Researchers found it significance to educate patient and his caretakers regarding his condition and how could the patient's motivation to recover would improve his emotional status. ROME of individual joints incorporating encouraging words regarding the importance of these exercises were also done. Patient after such management done by the authors has slightly improved in terms of socialization as evidenced by his cooperation especially when standing was imitated. Thus, there was a trend toward less depression. This study demonstrates that significant functional gains can still be attained as soon as patient has gained self-esteem after realizing the things he could do despite his condition. Authors of this study have learned that it is deemed necessary in the planning of rehabilitation. We found out that patient's psychosocial state plus caretaker's concern towards recovery are necessary.
