Abstract

The main task of rehabilitation is to restore a particular quality of life following the onset of morbidity secondary to a disease process or trauma. To be effective, it must concern itself with the intricacies of day-to-day living and the achievement of adaptive and vocational goals. This case report was made in the hope it will serve as a head start for similar studies in the future. This particular case report aims to re-evaluate the functional status of a patient who previously underwent physical therapy to identify existing and potential problems, to analyze what accounts for the presence of such difficulties and to educate patient regarding ADL modifications & techniques and home exercise program for maximize current resources. This repost focuses on the case of Rodolfo Parnala, a 52 year old former jail warden from Imus, Cavite, a diagnosed case of Cerebrovascular disease, Lacunar, (R) Middle Cerebral Artery. He underwent rehabilitation at DLSU-SIMDRU from November 1995 to January 1996 with a total of 8 PT sessions. A follow-up visit was accomplished last March 1997 where patient was given instructions regarding self-stretching techniques. Patient was further educated about the importance of a continuing home exercise program and the maintenance of a healthy diet & lifestyle, with specific emphasis on cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption. The implications of this case report may serve a number of purpose. It reiterates the need for follow-up consultations following the termination of therapy in order to assess patients situation and ability to cope with his residual disability or handicap. It advocates the importance of ADL modifications and home setting adjustments to accommodate new needs. Finally, it fosters the belief that motivation is a major factor influencing compliance and success of therapy. The researchers recommended to encourage the patient to continue doing his exercises, continue the use of AFO, and constantly alcohol beverages and eating high cholesterol foods. It is the researchers belief that the more far reaching goal of this endeavor is to improve the quality of health care delivery by exploring the home setting, where the program can make the greatest impact.
