Abstract
A comparison of the occupational status of long-term stroke survivors in the United States and Sweden revealed that 40% of the Swedes in the study returned to a form of employment (including part-time work), but none of the United States group returned to work. The scarcity of part-time work and shorter treatment period dictated by the third-party payers in the United States may account for this discrepancy, Statistical information and literature regarding Filipino stroke survivors who have resumed employment are currently lacking. The style of rehabilitation and coping strategies, the general lack of Medicare, vocational counselors and organized hemiplegic foundations such as stroke clubs, and the employment condition in the common Filipino family (wherein there is usually only one breadwinner, usually the male, who is generally more prone to stroke compared to his unemployed housewife) suggest that the Filipino stroke patient has an economic future very different from those of other countries. It is for above reasons that this case of a 49 year old Cerebrovascular Disease Thrombotic Left Anterior Cerebral Artery (CVD L thrombotic ACA) male patient who has successfully resumed physical labor is being presented. This case report aims to illustrated the various difficulties (such as architectural barriers, speech, cognitive and perceptual deficits), and recovery of skilled motor activities encountered by a hemiplegic patient in returning to work. The report will also show how the patient was able to cope with these difficulties and how continuing rehabilitation may yet improve the current quality of his work such that his physical condition may not become a deterrent to professional advancement.
