Abstract
Soccer is considered a high contact sport wherein numerous musculoskeletal injuries are incurred by the players. Its continued gain in popularity as a spot engaged in by high school player made its important to the researchers to identify the factors that contribute from the occurrence of injuries. This was done by determining the common mechanism of the injury, how many years the players have been engaged in the said sport, if the players and trainers have been educated on the following: a. usual presentation of the injury b. how the injury can be prevented c. application of first aid treatment; d. knowledge on the biomechanics of soccer like the physical requirements of the game, warm-up period, body conditioning and use of the body protection during training or competition. these were be conducted through questionnaires. The results of the study can be used as baseline information regarding the contributing factors to musculoskeletal injuries associated with soccer and could be a guide in the development of preventive measure programs. according to the related literature collected, it was found out that majority of the musculoskeletal injuries occurs in the lower limb. these are mainly joint rather than muscular injuries with the knee as the most often affected joint and the hamstring muscles among injuries tissues. These injuries often occur during competition rather in training and most of the playing staff experience these. The best management noted in the treatment of any musculoskeletal injuries is physical therapy modality. the study was conducted in five (5) different selected schools; Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle Greenhills, Don Bosco, Makati, San Agustine College, Makati, Xavier High School, Greenhills, for the school year 1997-1998. The sample includes 50 male soccer varsity players (10 from each school), without any musculoskeletal injury prior to engaging in the sport. The data was gathered through questionnaire with partial close ended question that will be sent to the school along with a cover to encourage respondents to cooperate. The results was presented by construction tables using frequencies and percentages with descriptive analysis. In our study, the said 5 schools implemented and initiated preventive measures in order to decrease the incidence of sustaining an injury among soccer players. These preventive measures were proper education and training of sport, warm-up, body conditioning, use injury most especially those players whose have been engaged with the sport for about 4 years. Players who played only a year or less through, are not spared of the injury, and based from the researchers recommend the strictly follow these preventive measures and to implement them to all other sport activities such as Basketball, Volleyball, Football abd Baseball. A study was conducted among 50 male soccer players with age ranging from 11-16 yrs. old, from 5 different schools namely, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle Greenhill, Don Bosco-Makati, San Agustine College-Makati and Xavier High School Greenhills, by answering given questionnaires. The study determined the factors that contribute to musculoskeletal injuries among soccer players. These are proper education and training in the sport, warm-up, body conditioning, use of protective gear and first aid treatment Program like these are initiated and implemented by these schools to ensure safety of athletes while engaging in the sport activity. Players have enough knowledge about these preventive measures but they do not continuously practice them, thus sustaining body injury. These are true to those who have played for the longest time span, Players who have been playing the sport for a year or less are also included in this category.
