Abstract

The number of elderly is increasing swiftly than any other age group. As the number of older people increase, a rehabilitative service is mostly needed. According to foreign studies older people with poor function in their hand joints are likely to develop significant declines in grip strength and hand function within two years, primarily related to the decrease in function our organ of accomplishment, our hands. This study therefore, was undertaken to establish baseline information and to establish a relationship of grip strength with age in Area and Poblacion, Dasmariñas, Cavite. Analysis of data obtained using correlation analysis showed that the average grip strength of male individuals has as a moderately small negative correlation with age. Occupation and involvement to any sport activities may be a factor that may be related to the small correlation accumulated in this study. Although theoretically related, low correlation of variables may be associated with other factors that might be responsible for such small correlation. Based on the findings of this study, the researchers would like to propose the following recommendations: First, a study be made on other factors that may influence that variability and a correlation as to how other intrinsic and extrinsic factors may affect the data analysis. Second, a particular study regarding subjects be made to eliminate wide variability of results. Lastly, since the study concluded that there is a correlation (although moderately small) between age and average grip strength, proper preventive measures should be further on be studied as to how an elder be able to cope up with his activities of daily living without becoming dependent.
