Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the most common disability of physical function found at Barangay San Manuel I and II, Area G. Dasmariñas Cavite. This study was aimed at determining the proportion of individuals with disabilities, determining the distribution of disabilities of physical function, describing the socio-demographic characteristics of individuals with disabilities, and determining the proportion of individuals who seek medical consultation and those who did not. The study was conducted at Barangay San Miguel I and II Area G. Dasmariñas, Cavite. Each Barangay was surveyed and subjects were chosen randomly. The subjects were residents of the said barangays with disabilities of physical function who were 7 years old and above (62 years old), regardless of sex, civil status, diagnosed or not. Only 250 households (125 each for San Miguel I and II) were included. Results showed that 3.0% of the total population studied both for San Manuel I and II have disabilities of physical function. The most common disability in both barangays was disability in walking without an assistive device. Subjects or individuals with disabilities of physical function in San Manuel I were prevalent in older age group, (62 years old), with equal prevalence in sexes, married, unemployed, has arthritic condition and had not consulted neurologist, physiatrist or general practitioner. In San Manuel II, subjects with disabilities were also common in more than 62 years old, male, widowed, with arthritic condition and had not consulted any medical help. With the help of the College of Physical Therapy, we recommend to conduct patient education programs on each barangay health workers. In addition, fund raising campaigns, through beneficial events in our College, be conducted to be able to purchase and donate assistive devices for the disabled individuals in the said barangays to improve their ambulation with lesser effort and accidents. The authors also recommend that another study may be made regarding the relation of disabilities with the disabled individuals' occupation. In this way, handicap, which is next to disability may be given importance.
