Abstract

The knee joint is a very complex joint with can support the body weight in an erect position without muscles contraction, it participates in lowering and elevating the body weight, permits rotation of the body when turning on a planted foot and also reduces energy expenditures by decreasing the lateral and vertical oscillations of the center of gravity of the body. the multiple functions of the normal knee to withstand large force, to provide great stability and offer large range of motions- achieved in a unique way. That is why it is very susceptible to traumatic injuries aside from its anatomical configuration wherein it is located between two lever arms- tibia and femur. the need a manual specially for conditions like osteoarthritis of the knee is very much essential to provide the large population of elderly with a basic knowledge as to osteoarthritis true etiology, course, progression and alternative ways of coping and preventing the painful episodes of this disease. This study aims to determne the effectivity of using a manual in increasing the knowledge of osteoarthritic patients at Veterans Memorial Medical Center as to reduction of pain and joint stiffness subjects include 10 patients of the out- patients department with osteoarthritis of the knee. Survey instrument used was a questionnaire given as a pre-test and post-test exam after which a manual was distributed. A T-test for testing the difference between 2 means was used to determine if there is a difference between the pre-test and post-test scores before and after the manual was distributed. Findings after the evaluation of the data include an increase in the knowledge of the patients regarding osteoarthritis and the reduction of the signs and symptoms noted. Functional capacity was also improved with those given a manual as compared to those without a manual.
