Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge of DLSU PT Interns Batch 2000 in their October-November 1999 rotation at DLSUMC-DIMDRU and JPRNMC in the application of heating modalities. It also aims to determine the knowledge of DLSU PT Interns Batch 2000 regarding the proper application of the following heating modalities: infrared radiation (IRR), hot moist pack (HMP), ultrasound (US), and paraffin wax bath (PWB). Subjects for the study were 20 DLSU PT interns Batch 2000 who had affiliation in the home-base centers mentioned above during October-November 1999. They should have been designated to treat out-patient during the said months and should have applied and operated all the heating modalities (HMP, IRR, US, and PWB) at least 3 times during his/her internship. Result show that, in terms of IRR application, the DLSU PT Interns Batch 2000 rotating at DLSU-DIMDRU and JPRNMRC during October-November 1999 are most knowledgeable in the instructions that should be given to their patients during IRR application (100%). They are least knowledgeable in the proper positioning of the IRR lamp (35%). In terms of HMP application, the interns are most knowledgeable in the aftercare of HMP (100%) and least knowledgeable in the instructions that should be given to their patients during HMP application (40%). In terms of US application, the interns are most knowledgeable in the aftercare of US (80%) and least knowledgeable on the proper technique of moving the transducer head during insonation (25%). In terms of PWB application, the interns are most knowledgeable in patient preparation and giving the necessary instruction to patients during application of PWB (100%). They are least knowledgeable in patient education regarding the procedure, the importance of evaluating thermal sensation, and the basis for determining appropriate intensity to be given to patients (60%). The authors recommend that before they move on to internship, the pre-interns should have made sure that they have obtained the necessary information/knowledge needed for the proper application of each said modality. Furthermore, we recommend that a study be done to determine if the interns practice what they know. This, too may be used to ensure the quality of patient care delivered by the DLSU PT Interns and to prevent any detrimental effects of heat such as burns and shock.
