Abstract
The study aims to describe the most common lower extremity sports injuries by male basketball players of the De La Salle University-Taft for SY 1998-1999. This descriptive study considered 17 injured athletes out of 30 recorded varsity players. Based on the data gathered, the following injuries were ranked from the most common to the least one: ankle sprain 947.06%), plantar fasciitis (17.65%), adductor strain (11.76%). Most of the injured athletes have been members of the DLSU varsity team training program for more than a year practicing 5 times a week with a duration of 3 hours per training session in an day. The player do warm-up activities such as stretching, jogging and plyometrics before practice proper and they engage in other high impact sports and activities such as weight training and boxing. All of the 17 samples benefited from PT as to treatment and patient education. The group therefore recommends that intensive reinforcement of activities and basic stretching techniques be taught to the athletes thus preventing the occurrence of strain or sprains primarily due to inadequate or improper stretching techniques.
