Abstract
The main objective of this study is to determine the Most Common Musculosketal complaint among Physical Therapy Interns of De La Salle University Medical Center Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This study aims to enforce more insights about common musculoskeletal complaints to both faculty and succeeding physical therapy students. It aims to provide a basis for the development of formulation of preventive measures or strategies for common musculoskeletal complaints among physical therapy interns. This study was conducted for the benefit of future physical therapy interns that would be rotating in (DLSUMC DPMR) to somehow increase their awareness and prevent them from developing musculoskeletal complaints that would affect their physical performance in the clinics. Through this study the authors primary goal was to emphasize the importance of thoroughly teaching preventive techniques, or methods (i.e. joint conservation techniques, proper body mechanics etc.) to the pre- Physical therapy interns, future rotating interns, and practicing professional physical therapists. The authors of this study would also like to inculcate knowledge on preventive techniques not only to their colleagues but to the patients as well. As future physical therapist patient education plays a major role in the rehabilitation of the people suffering from different conditions. As one of our mentors mentioned, "Educating these patients is like treating for the rest of their lives". In the study conducted, 81.71% male and female De La Salle University Health Sciences Campus (DLSU-HSU) Physical therapy interns who rotated at De La Salle University Medical Center Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (DLSUMC-DPMR) experienced low back pain, followed by myofascial pain syndrome (80.49%), and muscle strain (41.46%). The three most common causes of these musculoskeletal complaints were stress (75.61%), improper body mechanics (70.73%), and repetitive work tasks (62.20%). Most physical therapy interns were prone to experience stress due to physical exertion in administering physical therapy modalities, unconsciousness in practicing proper body mechanics, and secondary to repetitive work tasks during their clinical rotation at DLSUMC-DPMR. The following results were generated the use of questionnaire and through computing the frequency and percentage of the total number of class. Majority of the respondents claimed that the most frequent musculoskeletal complaint is low Back Pain, followed by myofascial pain syndrome and muscle strain. The most common cause of musculoskeletal complaint, as well as the most common aggravating factor was stress, which majority of the respondents claimed. While rest, was the common relieving factor. Musculoskeletal complaint on the lower back was claimed to be the most involved body part by the respondents.
