Abstract

Ankle Sprain is the most common injury sustained by athletes and attains the highest incidence of all basketball injuries. Athletes are at high risk for ankle sprain, which often results in days or weeks last from practice and competition. Ankle Sprain impairs basketball athletes' level of functioning and vacate gim from playing the game, thus prevention is definitely needed. There have been no exiting researchers regarding athletes' knowledge and practices on ankle sprain prevention. The purpose of this study is to give foundation to future researchers on the knowledge and practices in the prevention of ankle sprain. Subjects. Samples were drawn from 20 different colleges and universities that are participating in different leagues in Cavite. Ten universities were randomly selected, two universities were chosen for pre-implementation and the remaining 8 universities were used to cover the 100 subjects needed foe the actual implementation. Methods. A survey was done using a 20 items survey questionnaire that was pre-tested to obtain the necessary data about the knowledge and practices of basketball varsity athletes in prevention of ankle sprain. Correlation was done using Chi-Square Test to determine the relationship between demographic, athletic and clinical data and the level of knowledge and practices in the prevention of ankle sprain. Results. All basketball varsity athletes have a very good knowledge in the prevention of ankle sprain (x: 89.91 and SD: 5.27), but generally have fair level of practice in the prevention of ankle sprain (x: 29.59 and SD; 2.59). The researchers have found the knowledge and levels of practices of basketball varsity athletes in Cavite in the prevention of ankle sprain. Majority of the respondents are highly knowledgeable in the prevention of ankle sprain, but generally have fair level of practice in the prevention of ankle sprain. There were no significant relationships between level of knowledge and athletes' age (x2=2.14 < Xcv=9.49), sex (x2=5.96 < Xcv=5.99),team position. (X2=1.89 < Xcv=9.49), level of competition (x2=0.57 < Xcv=9.49) and previos history of ankle sprain (X2=3.82 < Xcv=5.99). On the other hand, there were significant relationships between level of practice in the prevention of ankle sprain and athletes' sex (X2=7.9 > Xcv= 5.99) and team position (X2=11.63 > Xcv=9.49), but no relationship on athletes 'age (x2=8.27 < Xcv=9.49), years of practice (x2=3.85>Xcv=5.99) and previous history of ankle sprain (x2=0.72 < Xcv=9.49). The study on the knowledge and practices of selected basketball varsity athletes found that majority of basketball varsity athletes are highly knowledgeable in the prevention of ankle sprain and have a fair level of practice in the prevention of ankle sprain. This study also yielded that sex and team position has a significant relationship in the level of practice in prevention of ankle sprain. However, level of knowledge in the prevention of ankle sprain has no significant relationship on the demographic, athletic and clinical data. Level of practice in the prevention of ankle sprain is not also related to athlete's age, years of practice and history of ankle sprain.
