Abstract

The spouse of the stroke patient commonly face situations that are characterized by social isolation, loss of previously close friendships and control over their lives which is associated with depression. This study is aimed to determine the psychosocial adjustments made by spouses after their partners suffered from stroke, the duration of their adjustments, and if there are any persons who helped them to adjust. The researchers asked for the approval of different center that includes: DLSU-UMS, HBSI, and JP. Letter for approval were given to the clinical supervisors and a two-page questionnaire were given to the respondents and were given one week to answer. The questionnaires were collected and gathered according to their respective rehabilitation center. Mosst of the spouses are moderately adjusted with the condition of the post-stroke patients as to communication ,financial, and social aspects, while they were slightly adjusted in sexual aspect of thier marriage. The period of adjustment took 3 week in majority of the spouses and the remaining number of respondents took 3-6 weeks to adapt to the psychosocial changes of their relationship . These information shows that caregivers, like the stroke patients , undergo enormous changes in their lifestyle before able to adapt to the current conditions of their partnets. Establishment of good relationship between the couple prior to stroke ensure the spouse a rapid adjustment to the changes on their lifestyle.
