Abstract

In this study, the researchers defined patient as an individual who suffers impairment, disability and handicap as the most important member of rehabilitation team. Individuals with stroke has been suffering from physical limitations wherein physical therapists are of big help, it is also important to consider the psychosocial factors as problems to be addressed with regards to their compliance to therapy. The general objective of this study is to determine the psychosocial factors that affect compliance of patient to therapy, while the specific objectives are the following: to determine the profile of respondents according to age, sex, occupation; to determine the psychological factor influencing patient's compliance as to the perception to the condition, perception as to the ability to return to pre-morbid status, financial and family support, perception to P.T., distance from patient's home to the PT clinic or center, mode of transfer and companion. This study is significant in determining the psychosocial factors that largely affect patient's compliance to therapy; enumerate some variables that contribute to the compliance of patients as to their psychosocial conditions; analyze the implication of such variables on patient's compliance, and interpret the findings that the researchers will come up with, through their questionnaires and determine some specific psychosocial factors that affect the course of patient's compliance to therapy. The researchers had 30 stroke patients that met the set criterias as respondents. Questionnaires consist 11 questions that tackle certain psychosocial factors to be answered by respondents in chosen PT centers. A letter of permission were presented to clinical supervisors of each chosen center. Results were tallied and most stroke patients are in their age range of 41-60 yrs. old, most of them are male and are unemployed. Most of the respondents have an idea or knowledge about their condition (stroke) and are positive in their belief of returning to their pre-morbid status. A greater number of respondents are financially supporting their selves and are morally supported by their families. They also had an idea or knowledge about Rehabilitation Medicine or Physical Therapy, most of them are living far from the centers where they undergo treatment, are riding public vehicles for transport and have their families as companions. These psychosocial factors have shown relevance and importance in continuing compliance of the subjects.
