Abstract

This thesis titled A Descriptive Study on the Health Promoting Lifestyles of Diabetic Patients in Three Hospitals in Cavite is aimed for the following: diabetic patients, caregivers of diabetic patients, other members of the rehabilitation team, physical therapists who will handle diabetic patients, and for the students who wish to be knowledgeable as to the health promoting lifestyles of diabetic patients in the certain hospitals. The data used in this study were obtained from questionnaires given to and answered by the diabetic patients from three hospitals in Cavite namely: De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC), Dr. Jose P. Rizal National Medical Research Center (JPRNMRC), and Saint Dominic medical Center (SDMC). Ten patients in each hospitals were selected, both in and out patients with a total of thirty respondents. The objectives of this study are: (a) determine the profile of diabetic patients in three hospitals in Cavite as to sociodemographic data (age, sex, occupation and educational attainment); (b) determine the profile of diabetic patients in three hospitals in cavite as to health promoting lifestyles (diet, exercise, educational attainments and medical interventions). After analyzing tha data by subjecting them to various statistical computations, the following findings were gained out of the 30 respondents: (a) 12 or 40% belong to the age group greater than 60 years old; (b) majority were female with frequency of 12 or 56.67%; (c) 15 or 50% of the respondents attained a college degree; (d) as to occupation, 17 or 56.67% were unemployed; (e) with regards to diet, 16 or 53.33% of the respondents do not follow diabetic diet; (f) as to preferred diet, 13 or 92.86% prefer to eat foods rich in proteins; (g) as to exercise, 12 or 40% of the respondents exercise daily; (h) with regards to the type of exercise done of these respondents who does exercise, 18 or 64.29% prefer walking; (i) as to personal hygiene, 17 or 56.67% follow a personal hygiene specific for Diabetes Mellitus; (j) as to medical consultation, 20 or 66.67% have regular medical consultations; (k) as to frequency of consultation, 8 or 40% have their medical consultation monthly; and lastly as to intake of medications, 21 or 70% take their medication regularly. The researchers conclude that the health promoting lifestyles of diabetic patients as to their diet, exercise, physical activities, personal hygiene and medical interventions help in determining the possible outcome of rehabilitation. These variables dictate the treatment approach that a Physical Therapist should take. The researchers recommend that future studies should take each factors or aspects of health promoting lifestyles of diabetic patients namely diet, exercise, etc. individually so as to gain a deeper and more specific understanding of the study. It should be made in a higher population and a bigger location regarding the topic. Using other data gathering procedure such as thorough interview with the patients should be done so as to give ligth to some aspects not covered by the questionnaires alone. Lastly, to attain accurate and precise results, the researchers should set an ample time to thoroughly evaluate these patients.
