Abstract

This thesis titled A Study of the Socio-Demographic and Clinical profile of Stroke Patients at Dr. Jose Rizal National Medical Research Center from January 1,1999 to December 31, 2001 is aimed for the following: stroke patients, caregivers of stroke patients, other members of the rehabilitation team, Physiotherapists who will handle stroke patients and for students who wish to be knowledgeable as to the socio-demographic and clinical profile of stroke patients in a certain hospital. The data used in this study were obtained from patient records both in and out patients with a total number of 877. From this number 311 patient records were used. The objectives of this study are: (a) determine the socio-demographic profile (age, sex and previous occupation); (b) clinical profile (compliance and presence or absence of disability); and (c) level of independence (full independence, moderate or with assistive device and partial independence). The results of the study: (a.) out of 874 medical records 435 or 49.77% fall under neurologic conditions; (b.) out of the 435 neurologic conditions 311 or 71.49% have a diagnosis of stroke; (c.) an age range of 56-65 was found to have the greatest number of stroke survivors; 30.55% of all stroke patients at Dr. Jose Rizal National Medical Research Center; (d.) males are slightly more predisposed than females with 52.7%; (e.) housewives take the lead among all other occupations with 22.19%; (f.) the top 3 disabilities are: ADL difficulty (83.9%), weakness (82%) and LOM (51.1%); (g.)196 or 63.02% of patient records showed moderate independences is most common Level of Independence; (h.) 42% of stroke patients have poor compliance and only 20% with Very Good compliance. The researchers conclude that the socio-demographic profile, clinical profile and level of independence of every stroke patient help in determining the possible outcome of rehabilitation. These 3 variables dictate the treatment approach that a Physiotherapist should take. The researchers recommend that future studies be made on the following: (a.) factors affecting the compliance of a stroke patient; (b.) most common predisposing factors of stroke ; (c.) Physical Therapy Rehabilitation in a Rural Community vs that one of the Urban Community; (d.) health habits of male stroke patients vs female stroke patients; (e.) most common occupation that lead to stroke and work description of each.
