Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the knowledge and practices of 30 randomly selected poorly compliant PTB patients under Category II (treatment failure) at PTSI-Chest Clinic, San Andres Bukid, Manila to prescribed medical treatment. Results of this study would be useful in devising a more effective and comprehensive health education that will improve compliance rate of PTB patients to medical treatment. Descriptive research was done with the use of questionnaires for data collection. All data gathered were grouped into tables and were analyzed descriptively. The result of the study showed that 76.66% of the subjects were aware that PTB is communicable but of curable type of disease. Majority of the respondents showed enough knowledge as to the duration and frequency of each drugs under Category II. However, 53% and 66.67% of the total respondents are confused as to the proper frequency in taking ethambutol and streptomycin respectively. 83.33% of the total respondents believed that sputum follow-up examination is important as part of PTB treatment. 83.33% also believed that drug resistance and total cessation of the healing process are the most common effects of irregular in-take of drugs. Out of the 30 respondents, 50% take their drugs irregularly and the most common reason attributed to failure of regular drug in-take is laziness with a percentage of 76.67%. It was surprising that 96.67% of the total respondents return for sputum follow-up examination as prescribed. The most common reason why there are instances wherein patients fail to return for sputum follow-up is that they are to much preoccupied with a 66.67%. The researchers concluded that indeed health education has helped in decreasing the frequency of poor compliance over the years, however, there is still a percentage of PTB patients who are considered treatment failure secondary to lack of enough knowledge with regards to consequences of poor compliance to medications as reflected in this study.
