Abstract

The researcher of this study are trying to find the standardized value of grip strength in Filipinos,since we do not have yet the standardized value of grip strength here in the Phillipines. the purpose of this study is to determine the grip of strength of Physical Therapy students Batch 2007 of DLS-HSC.Methods: This is a descriptive type of study. Our subjects composed of PT students age 18-23 of Batch 2007 of DLS-HSC which were included in the inclusion criteria such as (a) the subjects must be ingood health and no illness during the implementation of the study (b) the subjects must not be in anyphysical fitness program nor members of any athletic group (c) the subjects must have no upper extremity injury or trauma. The data gathering of the study was done at the amphitheater and at the 3rd floor of DLS-HSC. The implementation was done inside their classrooms during their breaktime and dismissal. The subjects were given surveys sheets to be filled up with their name, age, and handedness.After which,the assigned assessor obtained the weight and heigth as well as the grip strength. After the data have gathered, the researchers obtained the frequency and computed the mean and standard deviation. Results and Discussion: From 109 respondents, majority (40.4%) has grip strengh ranging from 20.0-27.99 kg with the mean scorce of 30.8kg. When grouped according to sex with grip strength, male respondents have mean score of 40.6 kg. And female respondents only have 23.9 kg. Upon comparing the dominant to non-dominant hand with grip strength, majority of right hand dominant respondent have a mean score of 31.11, while non dominant left hand only have 28.21 kg. On the left hand dominant respondents, majority have a mean score of 28.7 kg, while the non-dominant right hand have the mean score of 28.0 kg. In relation to BMI, majority of the respondents have normal BMI score with the mean score of 29.9 kg. Conclusion: The study showed that the 109 respondents, the Physical Therapy students of DLS-HSC batch 2007 have mean average grip strength of 30.8 kg. This study also yielded that age and sex has to do with the grip strength of an individual. However, body mass index does not affects grip strength of an individual.
