Abstract
To determine the treatment profile of cerebral palsy patients who were diagnosed with clubfoot deformity that had undergone either conservative or surgical approach with Physical therapy at Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. from January to December 2004. Research Design: A Descriptive study design utilized a secondary data analysis used to determine the prevalence of children with congenital clubfoot deformity who undergone conservative and surgical treatment approach. Setting: Phillipine Cerebral Palsy Inc. (formerly Elks's Cerebral Palsy Center) at DAO st. San Antonio Village, Makati City. Participants/Respondents:109 patients were included which has clubfoot deformity. Procedures/Interventions:The study was conducted first by seeking permission to clinical supervisor of PCPI to conduct study on their center & to have a direct access on charts for relevant data needed for the study. Upon consent, review of charts was done. Subjects obtained were divided as to whether the child undergone conservative approach of cast & splint or surgical correction or tendon release. General information was gathered as to subjects: names, age, sex & type of treatment they undergone for clubfoot deformity. Main Outcome Measures: Results and Discussions: The results of the study had shown that 61.24% of cerebral palsy patients has clubfoot deformity. This only shows that there is really a higher incidence of havingclubfoot deformity with patients who has neuromuscular problems like Celebral Palsy based on the literature. There are more patients who underwent conservative treatment here in the local settings. Although surgery showned significant success rate for the patientwith clubfoot, in the study more patients still choose to undergone conservative method of treament. The study showed that patients who undergone conservative approached has been both cast and splinted as form of treatment. The patient who undergone operative approached showed that most of the clubfoot deformity patients had soft tissue release that showed 46.34% as compared to tendon release and bone fusion which is further supported by the literature review that there is more satisfactory results under soft tissue released and that the other operative treatment are only done if the clubfoot had recurred. Conclusions: There was a higher incidence of clubfoot deformity occurring in Cerebral palsy patients Inc. There are also higher incidence of patients who undergone conservative treatment than operative treatment for the clubfoot deformity. In the Philippine setting, more patients had to undergone conservative management first and that if this is not favorable for the patient this is the time when surgery is being done.
