Abstract
This is a descriptive study which aims to determine the difficulties encountered by Caregivers in dealing with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of children with Cerebral Palsy. The study was conducted at Elk's CP Rehabilitation Center in Dao St. San Antonio Village, Makati City. a total of 57 caregivers were chosen to participate in the study. Study showed that the common age group of caregiver was 21-25 (25%). Majority of then were college graduates (54%). On the other hand, the common age group of Cerebral Palsy patient is 1-11 (77%). Most of them were females (54%). Majority of the caregiver do not know the type of cerebral palsy their patient was in and the common type was spatic cerebral palsy. Results of the study showed that a large proportion of the caregivers encountered difficulty in Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Eighty nine percent (89%) encountered problems related to feeding, bathing and grooming while 84% have problems in terms of ambulation or mobility and 77% has difficulty in toileting. The common difficulty of caregivers as to activities of daily living in relation to feeding was difficulty in assisting the patient using spoon and and fork (80%). In terms of bathing the patient, the most common problem was difficulty in carrying the patient in and out of the bath tub (73%). When caregivers assist the patient in the toilet bowl, most of them were having difficulty in making the patient sit in the toilet bowl (22%). In relation to the grooming most of the caregivers were having difficulty in putting on shoes/slippers (57%). Lastly, caregivers experienced difficulty in guiding/assisting the patient in walking. Researchers therefore concluded that feeding, bathing and grooming were the most common difficulty that the caregivers encountered in dealing with activities of daily living of Cerebral Palsy child (89%). These problems were no longer experienced by the caregivers as time passed by because they became more aware and comfortable in handling their CP child. Researchers recommend that formal training on the caregivers for them to have further knowledge in handling their child and allow them to participate during treatment sessions for them to have further knowledge on how to handle their CP child
