Abstract

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a very common disease among women especially those who are 45 years and above. This is a highly disturbing disease since it will affect patients mobility and locomotion since the knee is a weight bearing joint and therefore activities of daily living is affected too. There are a lot of treatments available, some commercialized such as liniments and hot compress which are the most common and some treatments that could only be known by studying the disease, such the need of the knowledge of doctors or physical therapists. this descriptive study was done to know the general perception of osteoarthritic patients regarding the disease and its treatment in rehab center within Cavite and Las Piñas through the use of questionnaire. Another example of treatment for osteoarthritis, regardless of duration of the said disease, because with correct execution it will eventually strengthen the knee muscles therefore keeping the stress of weight bearing off the joint itself. This is important to know because a lot of knee OA patients are misinformed and would rather immobilize the affected knee due to the pain experienced thus aggravating their condition. Most patients are not aware of such treatment not unless they undergone doctor/ PT consultation as have been found by the authors. With this study, we aim not only to know the general perception of osteoarthritic knee patients regarding the disease and its treatment especially strengthening exercise of the knee and also to motivate PT on giving proper and complete patient education and motivation since almost all patients get their knowledge about their ailment and treatment from them, as has been the results of this thesis.
