Abstract

This study utilized a descriptive type of research design which aims to determine the level of knowledge of caregivers on home rehabilitation among stroke patients in Cavite specifically in terms of health promotion, prevention of complication, physical function, activities of daily living, fall prevention, safety in home and community environment and energy conservation technique. Furthermore, the study also describes the profile of the respondents as to gender, relationship to the patient, and their education. A 35-item self-made survey questionnaire was validated and was utilized. A total of 50 respondents who fir the inclusion criteria were selected from De La Salle University Medical Center, Jose P. Rizal Hospital in Dasmariñas, and St. Dominic Medical Center in Bacoor, Cavite. The level of knowledge of was categorized into five: very high level of knowledge, high level of knowledge, moderate level of knowledge, low level of knowledge and very low level of knowledge based on the computed mean score. This study reveals that most of the respondents were female (72%) and were daughters (34%) of the patient. More than half of the respondents (56%) did not received education through seminar, counselling or health education mediated by the professionals regarding home rehabilitation. The study showed that the caregivers of stroke patients in Cavite have very high level of knowledge regarding energy conservation technique (4.42), fall prevention (4.32) and safety in home and community environment (4.22), they have high level of knowledge as to health promotion (4.14), activities of daily living (3.46), and physical function (3.42) and moderate level of knowledge as to prevention of complications (3.06). In conclusion, the respondents have a high level of knowledge regarding home rehabilitation based on the computed mean score of 3.87.
