Abstract

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a musculoskeletal condition that commonly affects the knee. This condition is encountered commonly by women but young active male athletes are also predisposed to have this condition. Its cause is unknown but pain is exarbated by motions involving the knee. Since there is lack of understanding about PFPS, this study aspires to determine the common treatment preferences of the respondents in the treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome. Subjects: During the pre-testing, 10 licensed PT clinicians, volunteers and staff participated, and a total of 59 respondents then participated in the main phase of the study. Method: The study utilized a descriptive type of research design and was conducted in the De La Salle University-Medical Center, Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial FoundationInc. Medical Center, General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital, St. Dominic Medical Center, Philippine Orthopedic Institute, National Kidney Institute, Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center, Healthway Medical Clinic, Procare Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Integra Care. The researchers utilized a researcher-made survey questionnaire written in English which was validated and pre-tested prior to the implementation of the study. Purposive sampling was done. Results: Most of the respondents were female belonging to the age group of below 25 and the least coming from the age group of above 31. According to years of practice most of the respondents belong to below 4 years of practice (54.55%) with the least coming from above 8 years of practice (9.09%). More than half of the respondents have already experienced handling a patient with PFPS (76.36%). Majority of the respondents prefer strengthening exercises in treating patients with PFPS. This is followed closely by range of motion exercises (87.04%), Stretching exercises and peripheral joint mobilization exercises have 59.26% and 51.85% respectively. As to physical modalities, a greater part of the respondents preferred re-alignment procedure of majority of the respondents. Specific re-alignment procedures noted are patellar taping (80%), bracing (40%), shoe orthoses (17.78%). As to combination of interventions, majority of the respondents prefer combination of therapeutic exercises and physical modalities in the treatment of patients with PFPS (80.39%) followed by therapeutic exercises plus re-alignment procedure (27.45%) and physical modalities plus re-alignment procedures (13.73%). Conclusion: From the data and results that were gathered, the researchers conclude that the preferred physical therapy interventions in the treatment of PFPS in selected De La Salle-Health Sciences Campus Affiliate Centers are therapeutic exercises and physical modalities (98.18% followed by combination of interventions (92.73%) and re-alignment procedures (81.82%).
