Abstract

The study aimed to determine the most common musculoskeletal injury by International Frisbee tournament players. It also sought to determine the number of Ultimate Frisbee injured players as to tournament play, the sociodemographic profile of the injured players as to age, gender and nationality, the playing history of the injured players in the upper extremity, lower extremity and back and spine body segments. Research Design: this study utilized a descriptive type of research design. Setting: ateneo De Manila, St. Bellarmine Field, Katipunan, quezon City and Davao City, Mindanao. Participants: 93 diagnosed respondents who are current league participants of the Philippine Ultimate Association sanctioned Habgat League 2006 and active current members of the Davao Ultimate Association (DULA), 93 of which were diagnosed of musculoskeletal injuries. Procedures/Intervention: Each subject was given a survey form that was divided into sociodemographic profile, playing history and musculoskeletal explained to the respondents and were supervised on how to answer the survey form with outmost accuracy. After the survey form with outmost accuracy. After all data were collected, injuries were grouped as to upper extremity, lower extremity and back and spine. From the results, the most common musculoskeletal injury was determined. Results: the average Ultimate Frisbee player in the study is between the ages of 21-25 years, is of the male gender, is of Filipino nationality and had been playing the sport for less than a year. Their general playing history was 3 times a week for more than an hour during each session. Majority of the players in our study were also found to have been involved in contact sports. The most frequently injured body segment was lower extremity and ankle sprain was the most prevalent injury. Conclusion: The most common musculoskeletal injury sustained by International Ultimate Frisbee tournament player's is ankle sprain, involving the lower extremity. Recommendation: Educational intervention, like conducting seminars to reduce the prevalence of ankle sprain; future study investigating factors associated with the occurrence of ankle sprain and other musculoskeletal injuries among this particular group of players and prevalence of neurological injuries in Ultimate Frisbee.
