Abstract
This is a descriptive study that determines the effectiveness of a manual in increasing the knowledge of caregivers in the management of motor delay of children with cerebral palsy 0-3 years of age, specifically on the basic concepts such as Definition of Cerebral Palsy, cause of Cerebral Palsy, developmental Milestone, and primitive reflex and treatment techniques for motor delay problems such as: head control, rolling, reach and grasp, sitting, crawling, standing and walking. The study was conducted at the Philippine Cerebral Palsy Inc. at Makati City and St. Paul Hospital at Dasmariñas, Cavite. A manual was utilized to help caregivers improve their knowledge regarding proper techniques in managing CP patientś ages 0-3. In addition, the manual includes proper procedures and guidelines in managing motor delays of CP. Results showed a significant increase in the knowledge of caregivers in handling Cerebral palsy children with motor delay after distribution of the manual, 7 out of 10 caregivers find the manual moderately effective based on the difference of the post-test and pre-test scores. A trans-disciplinary approach manual evaluation sheet was given to the caregivers to rate the content and structure of the manual. The authors conclude that the manual is moderately effective in increasing the knowledge of caregivers in managing motor delay of children with cerebral palsy. The researchers then recommend that the future researchers and other beneficiaries of this manual like the caregivers to further improve the content of the manual and attend seminars to enhance their knowledge. Also, a follow-up study determining the factors affecting the effectiveness of a manual should be done with larger number of subjects.
