Abstract
This is a descriptive study that determines the level of motor function among stroke patients in De La Salle Health Sciences Intitute affiliated centers using Motor Assessment Scale. It also determines the socia-demographic profile, the clinical profile, and the motor function score of the participants on each of the following actitivities: supine to side-lying, supine to sitting, balance sitting, sitting to standing, walking, upper arm functions, hand movements and advance activities. A total of 23 participants, diagnosed as stroke patients, were evaluated from different De La Salle Health Sciences Institute Affiliated Centers namely: De La Salle University Medical Center, Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital, General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital, St. Dominic Hospital, and MEdical Center Imus. Each participants were asked to perform the activities within 15-60 minutes while researchers videotaped them. After taking videos of all the participants, the researchers were trained by a licensed PT on how to rate using one difficult video. The rest of the videos were rated using a 7-point scale. The final score of the participant in each actitivty was given through a concurred consensus within the group by discussing and reviewing the videos again to have a uniformed setting. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics by means of frequencies and tables. The mean scores of all the patients per activity and Motor Assessment SCale scote were interpreted as low functional, moderately functional and highly functional. Results showed that stroke is common to participants who are below 55 years old, males, right handed and among factory workers. Most of the stoke patients have left sided lesion, without other medical co-morbidities, in 1-6 months post-stroke duration and uses assistive devices for ambulation. Motor function scores showed that participants are moderately functional in supine to side lying, supine to sitting, balance sitting, sitting to standing and walking but low functional in upper arm functional in upper arm functions, hand movements and advance hand activities. The researchers therefore concluded that the level of motor function among stroke patients is moderately functional and recommended that the participants should use the affected limb in order to optimize independence.
