Abstract

This is a descriptive study that determines the functional outcome of patients with lumbas disc herniation given a physical therapy rehabilitation session using oswestry disability questionnaire. Specifically, functional outcomes as to pain intensity, personal care, lifting, walking, sitting, standing, sleeping, sex life, social life and travelling were described. A total of twenty seven respondents are included in the study. Their socio-demographic profile, the treatment management and the number of treatment session of the patient was also recorded by the researcher during the implementation process. Results of the study showed that the mean age of the respondents was 41, majority of them were female, married and plain housewives. Results of the study showed that most (16 out of 27) of the respondents have mild disability. The results of the study showed that most of the patients with lumbar disc herniation experience complete relief of pain because of pain killers (9), looks after themselves normally without causing extra pain (10), can lift heavy weights but gives extra pain on their lower back (8), walking for 25 miles is limited by pain (10), sitting for more than 10 minutes is limited b y pain (7), can stand as long as they want but gives extra pain (8), can sleep without any pain (12), can have a normal sexual life without any pain (17), normal social life without any pain (12) and can travel anywhere but gives extra pain (9). Patients with lumbar disc herniation undergoing physical therapy rehabilitation in selected centers in Cavite have mild disability based on the Oswestry Disability Score 32.32%. Specifically, theu have sever disability as to pain intensity and travelling based on a score of 49.6% and 46.6% respectively. They presents with mild disability as to personal care, lifting, walking, sitting, standing, sleeping, and social life while htey have minimal disability as to sex life. The researchers then recommend that patient education program like seminars on proper back hygiene and relaxation techniques be conducted in the future.
