Abstract
Functional status is the ability to perform self-care, self-maintenance and physical activities. It is very essential to every individual since it can determine the capabilities of a person with or without disability. The study aims to determine the functional status of persons with paraplegia secondary to spinal cord injury at Tahanang Walang Hagdanan. The objective of the study is to determine the functional status of the participants as to feeding, respiration, mobility and transfer. A descriptive type and convenience sampling was used. A total of 32 persons with paraplegia secondary to Spinal corf injury were included in the study. Modified Spinal Cord Independence Measure was utilized in the study. It measures four areas of functional status of persons with Spinal Cord Lesions such as feeding, respiration, mobility and transfer. Mobility was further divided into mobility in bed and action to prevent pressure sore, mobility indoors (short distances), mobility for moderate distances (10-100 meters) and mobility outdoors (more than 100 meters). Transfer from wheelchair to bed, transfer from wheelchair to toilet-tub and transfer from wheelchair to car. A thorough one on one observation was done to obtain the results. The overall results revealed that majority of the participants were High Functional as to feeding, respiration, mobility and transfer. This was possible because their upper extremity strength is well developed due to their nature of work which requires the use of their arms. In conclusion, persons with paraplegia secondary to SCI in TWH belong to high functional group. Although they have slight difficulties in performing their ADLs, they could still manage to maximize their functional capabilities by adapting to their environment and by utilizing their work as a home of improvement in terms of physical, mental and social function in the society.
