Abstract

This is a descriptive study that was conducted among licensed Physical Therapy graduates of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute to determine their core competencies in accordance with APTA standards, specifically in areas of screening, examination / re-examination, prognosis, diagnosis, intervention, plan of care, evaluation and professionalism. A total of 102 licensed PT graduates of DLSHSI batch 2006 to 2010 participated in this study. A researcher - made questionnaire based on APTA guidelines was used as survery instrument of the study. The core competencies of the participants were measure using 96 items which were answered using a 5-point liert scale covering eight core areas. Results showed that less than half of the participants were performing volunteering work while more than 35 percent were PT staff in hospitals/clinics. Only few held position as clinical supervisor. In terms of level of competency in eight areas covered, participants posted overall mean scores ranging from 3.5 to 4.49. this indicates that they had high levels of competency in screening; examination / re-examination; prognosis; diagnosis; intervention; plan of care; evaluation; and professionalism. Moreover, all of the 96 items that were used to measure the core competencies were "frequently" practices by the participants. In conclusion, the Lasallian Physical Therapy graduates of Batch 2006-2010 have a high level of competency based on the computed overall mean scor of 4.18. Specifically, they are highly competent in performing examination/re-examination (4.20), prognosis (4.20), diagnosis (4.19), intervention (4.16) and screening (4.00). The researchers then recommend that subjects related to screening, emrgency procedures and first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation must be integrated in the BSPT curriculum and that a follow-up study on the relationship of the level of competency of PT graduates to their years of professional practice, type of postion held, and work setting be done in the future.
