Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of the Nintendo WII on patients with cerebral palsy with upper motor limb deficits. This was done through determining the baseline characteristics as to developmental age, severity of cerebral palsy, and the pre-test scores, also in determining significant difference between pre and post assessments as to the upper limb motor control deficits in the 21 upper limb activities in the ABILHAND-Kids and determining the significant difference of pre and post assessments using the ABILHAND-Kids Assessment Scores. Five patients with cerebral palsy from Dr. Jose P. Rizal Elementary School were included in this case series and were given a twice a week session for six weeks protocol in which included the use of the Nintendo Wii as to games such as Wii Sports Tennis and Boxing. Pre and post assessments of each patient were taken with the use of the ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire. In determinin g the baseline characteristics, developmental age and severity were similar in baseline and pre-test scores were not. In determining the significant differences, t-test was used and it can be inferred that there was somehow an improvement in majority of the activities but the values did not reach up to 'not rejecting' which is equivalent for having a significant improvement with the given results as to significance of the upper limb motor control of the patients who participated, it can be seen that there is not much of an improvement of the use of the Nintendo Wii on patients with cerebral palsy with upper control limb deficits.
