Abstract
Proper disposal of unused and expired medicines has been a challenging public health concern. Pediatrics are common consumers of medicines, with their primary caregivers responsible for the disposal of unused and expired medicines. Their lack of knowledge and awareness often leads to improper disposal of medicines. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of flip chart-based intervention on the level of knowledge and awareness in proper medication disposal among primary caregivers in Dasmariñas City, Cavite. This employed quasi-experimental study design and intended to establish cause-and-effect relationship between the self-paced and assisted flip chart learning intervention, and the knowledge and awareness of respondents regarding proper medication disposal. Both pre-survey and post-survey questionnaires were given to 90 primary caregivers of selected barangays in which the results established the baseline knowledge and awareness, and effects of the intervention. The socio-demographic profile of the respondents showed that more than half of respondents (55.56%) belonged to age range of 28 to 43 years old, were females (84.44%), a high school graduate (45.56%), and had no work (47.78%). The baseline data showed moderate levels of knowledge and awareness among primary caregivers with an average score of 34 and 27, respectively. No association was observed between the baseline level of awareness and the socio-demographic profile, while sex was found to have an association (p-value = 0.01) with the baseline level of knowledge of primary caregivers. Furthermore, comparing the learning methods, only the assisted flip chart learning is proven to have a significant difference in raising their level of awareness (p-value= 0.04). However, regardless of the learning method, flip chart intervention is indeed successful in improving the level of knowledge (38.16%, p-value= < 0.01) and level of awareness (30.37%, p-value= < 0.01) of primary caregivers. In conclusion, flip chart intervention is an effective educational tool in improving the knowledge and raising the awareness of primary caregivers regarding proper medication disposal.
