Abstract

This qualitative study delves into the perspectives and approaches of employers in the food and retail occupations on the success of supported employment within their businesses. Utilizing a phenomenological design and purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 employers in the food and retail industry from across the Philippines based on the list from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), and Public Employment Service Office (PESO) who either have current or past experiences in employing Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). Using the Collaizi’s Phenomenological Data Analysis, the researchers were able to analyze the perspectives and approaches of employers on the success of supported employment which revealed themes such as: a) Workplace Attitudes, Consumer Attitudes, and Legislation and Policies were the identified factors contributing to the perspective of the employers on the overall success in supported employment. b) Partnership with organizations and institutions, Education and Training, Work and Environmental Modifications, Effective Communication Strategies, Ability-based job placement, and Considering employee feedback were among the approaches currently practiced c) Promoting diversity, enhancing equity, and improving inclusivity are the potential areas for improvement to support their employees. The findings in our study reveal the current realities of supported employment in the food and retail industries in the Philippines that, albeit indicate advancement, also underscores the ongoing gaps in creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace environment for PWD employees in the country.
