Abstract

: In the advent of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), the Philippines implemented strict community quarantine guidelines and travel bans to halt further transmission of the fatal disease. It was stated that senior citizens experienced fear, stress, and social isolation due to limited community participation and social participation which is caused by preventive measures such as lockdowns and social distancing. This resulted in physical, psychological, and social participation effects among senior citizens. In other countries, there were studies that shown senior citizens who live in urban and rural areas have differences in terms of coping strategies and adaptation. Given these, the study aims to determine if there are significant differences in the social isolation coping strategies and adaptation among senior citizens in selected urban and rural areas in Cavite amidst COVID-19 pandemic. Through crowdsourcing, 140 respondents answered a survey tool adopted from the study by Wang et al. (2021). T-test was used to identify significant differences of two cohorts. Results revealed that senior citizens in urban and rural areas have significant differences in terms of coping and adapting to source of information, personal experience with the virus, challenges experienced, and source of support. Coping and adapting in terms of national leadership and government response and preparedness and adaptation were found to have no significant difference between senior citizens in both areas. Given these results, it was determined that there were parameters and specific statements that the senior citizens relate and highly agree with as to how they coped and adapted during COVID-19 pandemic.
