Abstract

This descriptive research study was conducted to identify the personnel radiation monitoring practices of nuclear medicine staff in the Philippines. The study utilized a descriptive design and a self-made questionnaire to assess the respondents’ practices. Using a non-proportionate quota sampling, 61 respondents were gathered using an online and face to-face survey. The data was treated using frequency and percentage. Majority of the respondents are nuclear medicine technologists and have 1 to 4 years of experience. Moreover, most of the departments use OSL, are subscribed to PNRI, and offer PET and therapy services. The personnel radiation monitoring practices in the nuclear medicine departments regarding usage, storage, and dose reports generally match the standards and recommendations of the calibration centers. Primary dosimeters are provided to the respondents, are always worn throughout their duty, and are clipped at the chest area with the detector facing the source. Dosimeters are worn underneath lead aprons. In disuse, primary dosimeters are stored in a dosimeter cabinet. Control dosimeters are present, placed in the control console, and stored together with other dosimeters during transit. Furthermore, their superiors have informed them of their dose reports. Findings regarding influencing factors reveal that the service provider's monitoring period aligns with the respondents' experience. Moreover, most respondents receive training, but they vary in frequency. The majority of the respondents have been communicated with instructions verbally. Additionally, ring and eye lens dosimeters were not commonly provided. Furthermore, RPO recommends adhering to ALARA principles in instances of dose limit 2 exceedance and pregnancy of employee.
