Abstract
The study was based on the beliefs and practices of selected mothers about prenatal care in selected upland and lowland community. To determine if there is a difference in the beliefs and practices between the selected upland and lowland mothers with regard to prenatal care, was the objective of the study. The number of respondents for each community was 30 selected mothers having a total number of 60 respondents for the study. Person consulted for the prenatal care, time and frequency of consultation, foods avoided during pregnancy, activities and the last sexual contact during pregnancy were the factors that corresponds to the beliefs and practices on prenatal care. These factors were considered by the researchers in conducting the study. Based on the findings, there is a difference in the beliefs and practices of prenatal care among selected mothers in the upland and lowland community in terms of time and frequency of consultation and foods avoided during pregnancy. On the other hand, considering the factors like person consulted during pregnancy, activities and the last sexual contact, only a slight difference was seen in the last result of the study. Based on the findings, there is a difference in the beliefs and practices of selected mothers about prenatal care in the upland and lowland community, thus rejecting hypothesis no. 1 and 2. Mothers in the lowland and the upland community consulted the midwife, maybe because of the availability and accessibility of midwife and the health center in their place. Mothers in the lowland community had their first consultation during the first month of pregnancy, consulted as often as every month and have avoided certain kind of food, maybe because of the information they gathered through health education. While mothers in the upland community had their first consultation during the middle of pregnancy, consulted only every three months on only when they needed only to consult and do not avoid certain kind of food, maybe because of the information they gathered through health education. While mothers in the upland community had their first consultation during the middle of pregnancy, consulted only every three months or only when they needed only to consult and do not avoid certain kind of food, maybe because they are not well informed and unaware of the importance of pre natal check-up and they lack health education. Mostly, mothers in the upland and lowland community perform household activities as one of their exercise maybe because they believe that it is through these activities their muscles will be loosened and does not need extra time or this exercise. In the lowland and upland community, mothers had their last sexual contact at the fifth to sixth month of pregnancy maybe because they believe that it was only during third time that sexual contact is applicable.
