Abstract
The study specifically aimed the following: 1. To determine the profile of the respondents when they are grouped according to sex, clinical condition, and presence of significant others. 2. To determine the level of social interaction of the respondents. 3. To determine if there is significant difference in the level of interaction to those who were subjected to touch and those who are not. The respondents of the study were 30 elderly patients belonging to ages 50 and above, male and female, presently confined in De La Salle University Medical Center and Jose P. Rizal Medical Research Hospital in Dasmariñas, Cavite. The purposive sampling which is a non-probability method was used. Quasi-experimental method was used in the study. A questionnaire was developed by the researcher to gather the data needed to answer each of the specific questions. The statistical test were applied were: mean, relative frequency, and t-test. The profile shows that there were more males (19 or 63.3 percent) than female (11 or 36.7 percent). In terms of clinical condition there were more who were afflicted with chronic diseases (20 or 66.7 percent) and in terms of significant other, there were more immediate relationship. It was found out that clinical condition and presence of significant others did not influence the social behavior of the respondents but those who were in the experimental group according to sex showed a significant difference in the level of their social interaction. There is an increase in the level of the interaction than those who were in experimental group than the control group. This findings reveal that there was a significant difference in the level of social interaction to those who were subjected to touch than those who were not. It was concluded that the more touch rendered to the elderly will mean a higher degree of social interaction.
