Abstract

The researchers used a non-experimental descriptive method. The respondents of this study were the freshmen nursing students, consisted of 250 and presently enrolled at De La Salle University – Dasmarinas. The researchers adapted a tool from John W. Mason entitled “How well do you handle stress”, which is a 20-item scale type of instrument in gathering the data. The statistical treatment used in the study were percentage distribution, mean and chi-square test. 1) From the 248 respondents, most of them are female than males, and most of the freshmen students graduated from private schools than public schools, most of them are Catholic than Non- catholic. Most of the freshman students have a family income of 20,000 – 30,000 than those with family income of 10,000 – 20,000, 30,000 and above. Most of them preferred to take up health related course than non – health related courses; 2) Most of the female freshmen population has the highest coping abilities to stress than male freshmen population. Most of them of the respondents who came from private schools have highest level of coping abilities to stress than those who have graduated from private schools. The freshmen students who have a higher coping abilities to stress are mostly Catholic than those who are non- Catholic. Most of them belongs to a family income which ranges from 20,000 to 30,000, who have the highest coping abilities to stress, most of them who have preferred to take up health related courses have the highest coping abilities to stress than those who decided to take up non- health related courses; 4) Coping abilities to stress of freshmen students was affected by gender, secondary school category, and family income; 4) Coping abilities to stress of freshmen students is not affected by religion and course preference.
