Abstract

The informants were 15 fourth year nursing students of De La Salle University-Health Sciences Campus, College of Nursing and Midwifery Class of 2001. The participants of the study were chosen using purposive sampling. After the researchers had analyzed and studied the elicited information and data regarding the experience of selected senior nursing students during their initial handling of labor and delivery, the researchers found out the different feelings and emotions experienced by the respondents. These are: (a) fear, (b) feeling of excitement, and (c) avoidant behavior. Fear was primarily associated with the anticipation that something ma happen to the patient while under their care and that they might commit mistakes in doing the procedure. Different bodily reactions such as mild tremors of hands, sweating, cold and clammy skin were associated with fear. These negatively affected their level of performance. On the contrary, there were respondents who were eager to perform the procedure because they have developed self-confidence. But still, there were those who intentionally evaded the learning opportunity for the purpose of relieving their feeling of stress. Members of the health care team enhanced the experimental learning of senior nursing students during initial handling of labor and delivery through (a) confidence building, (b) acting as a “pushing force”, (c) helping them acquire a feeling of security, (d) provision of proper guidance, and tension elimination. Other factors as (a) presence of clinical instructors, and (b) presence of doctors and midwives, hindered learning,, because of negative behaviors toward students. Theses increased the stress that was already present in the students and created an environment that was not conducive to learning. The respondents were able to capture some insights such as the value of life, the feeling of fulfillment and actualization, which were considered as realizations drawn from experience of initial handling of labor and delivery.
