Abstract

This study utilized the descriptive method of research. The respondents were the 100 postpartum mothers who belonged to the age bracket of 15-49 years old and gave birth from December 2000 up to present (2001) in Molino, Bacoor, Cavite. A questionnaire which consisted of five sections such as general information, knowledge, beliefs, practices in breastfeeding, and level of compliance in breastfeeding was used as data gathering tool. Mean, standard deviation, t-test, Pearson’s r, frequency, and F-test were used for statistical treatment. The following findings were drawn: 1.) The profile of the respondents in terms of civil status showed that 97% were already married. Majority of the mothers were receiving a monthly income of ₱10,001-₱20,000 which comprised 40% of the total respondents. In terms of educational attainment, 45% of the mothers were able to finish high school level. Most of the respondents came from the province outside CALABARZON area (47%). In terms of their health status, 94% of them do not have an illness. Most of them had a total number of children ranging from 2 to 3 which comprises 56% of the total number of respondents. Majority of them belonged to the age bracket of 24-32 years old (42%); 2.) The level of knowledge, beliefs, and practices of the mothers regarding breastfeeding varied from good to excellent level. The overall mean in the level of knowledge is 4.43, which showed an excellent level of knowledge regarding breastfeeding. While the overall mean in the level of belief is 3.38 which revealed a very good level. On the other hand, the overall mean in the level of practices is 3.62 which stated that there is a very good level of compliance of mothers regarding breastfeeding; 3.) The level of compliance of the mothers regarding breastfeeding ranged from very good to excellent level. The overall mean in the level of compliance 4.20, which connoted an excellent level of compliance of the respondents regarding breastfeeding; 4.) There is no significant difference in the level of knowledge, beliefs, and practices of the mothers regarding breastfeeding in selected community in Cavite when grouped according to civil status, socio-economic status, educational attainment, place of origin, health status, number of children, and age; 5.) There is no significant difference in the level of compliance of mothers regarding breastfeeding in selected community in Cavite when grouped according to civil status, health status, number of children, and age. But there is a significant difference in the level of compliance of mothers regarding breastfeeding when grouped according to socio-economic status, educational attainment, and place of origin; 6.) There is no significant relationship between the level of knowledge, beliefs and practices and level of compliance of mothers regarding breastfeeding in selected community in Cavite. But there is a significant relationship between the level of compliance and level of beliefs.
