Abstract

This study employed a non-experimental descriptive type of study. 107 youth offenders with no particular type of crime from selected municipality detention centers in Cavite were chosen as respondents. A checklist type of questionnaire adapted from the study conducted by Pereña, et al (1999) was used as data gathering tool. For the statistical treatment, frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and F-test or One-Way ANOVA were used. On the basis of the summary findings, the researcher drew up these conclusions: 1) majority of the respondents were young adolescents, middle children in the family, Catholic, have a monthly income of P10,000 and below, and living with their immediate families; 2) the overall mean of the childrearing practices of primary caregiver is relatively on the average. Although most of respondents belong the less fortunate group in the society, they still have parents who respond to their physiologic and biological needs. The primary caregivers ought to teach them to related and interact with others and encourage them to explore their world. But sometimes, even if the parents provide what their children need, still there is something which is lacking. No matter how much the parents love and care for their siblings, it is still important to show and let them feel how much they value them. Based on the results, the least mean among the four categories of childrearing practices is the spiritual aspect. One of the this left undone is inculcating God’s teachings and telling them that they owe everything to Him for who and what they are right now. Values, may it be social, emotional, or spiritual must be handed in the hearts and minds of these children in preparing them for adult life, Because these, together with the warmth of love and care from their parents, will make them a responsible, mature, and a free person that can distinguish right from wrong; 3) On the average, the mean perception of youth offenders on the childrearing practices of primary caregivers when they are grouped according to age, ordinal position, religion, socio-economic status, and family structure are not specific predictors in determining the perception of the young offenders with regards to the childrearing practices of their primary caregivers.
