Abstract
This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and reasons for poor compliance of mothers to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at selected barangays in Amadeo and Silang, Cavite. B.SPECIFIC To determine: 1.The profile of the respondents in terms of age, civil status, educational attainment, employment status, monthly family income and number of children. 2.The level of knowledge of mothers on the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). 3.The reasons for poor compliance of mothers to Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). 4.If there are significant differences in the level of knowledge of mothers when the respondents are grouped according to age, civil status, educational attainment, employment status, monthly family income and number of children. This study determined the level of knowledge and reasons for poor compliance of mothers to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at selected barangays in Amadeo and Silang, Cavite and its relationship to demographic factors such as age, civil status, educational attainment, employment status and monthly family income. The respondents of the study were mothers of any age and civil status, who have at least one child aged 1 year old and below with incomplete immunization from the records at the Barangay Health Center. The percentage distribution of the respondents in terms of age are as follows: 4% is below 17 years old, 16% is 18 to 23 years old, 38% is 24 to 29 years old, 24% is 30 to 35 years old and 18% belongs to the 36 years old and above. In terms of civil status, 18% is single, 74% is married, 4% is separated and another 4% is widowed. In terms of educational attainment, 14% obtained elementary education, 44% obtained high school education, 36% graduated from college and 6% finished vocational education. In terms of employment status, 38% is employed, 12% is self-employed, and 50% is unemployed. In terms of monthly family income, 70% has an income below Php 10,000, 22% has an income between Php 10,001-Php 20,000, 4% has an income between Php 20,001- Php 30,000 and another 4% has an income of Php 30,000 and above. In terms of number of children, 60% has one to two children, 30% has three to four and 10% has five children or more. 2. The level of knowledge of mothers regarding the Expanded Program on Immunization is analyzed using the frequency and percentage frequency of the score of the respondents. Out of 50 respondents, 96% know that immunization is important for their children. The respondents also know the diseases that the vaccines prevent. 80% know that OPV is given to prevent polio, 72% know that AMV is given to protect against measles and 70% know that DPT vaccine is given against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus through only 46% know that BCG is given against tuberculosis. The level of knowledge of mothers is further classified into: a) very low (0-5 out of 20), b) low (6-10 out of 20) c) average (11-15 out of 20) and d) high knowledge (16-20 out of 20). Also, 44% has an average level of knowledge, 32% has low level of knowledge, 14% has high level of knowledge and 10% has very low level of knowledge regarding the Expanded Program on Immunization. 3. The reasons for poor compliance of mothers to Expanded Program on Immunization are financial problems which accounted for 20% misconceptions which accounted for 30% and 60% accounted for other reasons like: parents' lack of time, unawareness of schedule and change of residence. 4. There are significant differences in the level of knowledge of mothers regarding the Expanded Program on Immunization when they are grouped according to age and educational attainment, while there are no significant differences in the level of knowledge of mothers when they are grouped according to civil status, employment status, monthly family income and number of children.
