Abstract

This study utilized a descriptive design. The respondents were 141 residents of Imus, Cavite selected in using purposive sampling. The researchers utilized a self-made tool with mode of responses in 3-point scale. Frequency distribution, percentage, f-test and t-test of independent mean were the statistical tools used in the study. The study concluded that; 1) Most of the primiparous mothers in selected communities in Imus, Cavite were 20 to 29 years old, married, have college level of education, unemployed, and monthly family income of P10,000 to P20,000; 2) The primaparous mothers in selected communities in Imus, Cavite have high level of knowledge in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygiene, newborn care, psychological care and consultation and examination; 3) The primaparous mothers in selected communities in Imus, Cavite have high level of practice in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygience, psychological care, and consultation and examination; 4) Age has no significant influence on the level of knowledge of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygiene, newborn care, psychological care, and consultation and examination; 5) Civil status has no significant influence on the level of knowledge of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest and newborn care but has a significant influence on the level of knowledge in terms of nutrition, personal hygiene, psychological care, consultation and examination and regarding postnatal care; 6) Educational attainment has no significant influence on the level of knowledge of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygiene, newborn care and psychological care but has significant influence on the level of knowledge in terms of consultation and examination and postnatal care; 7) Employment status has no significant influence on the level of knowledge of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygiene, psychological care and postnatal care but has significant influence on the level of knowledge in terms of newborn care and consultation and examination; 8) Monthly income has no significant influence on the level of knowledge of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest, newborn care and psychological care but has significant influence on the level of knowledge in terms of nutrition, personal hygiene, consultation and examination and postnatal care; 9) Age has no significant influence on the level of practice of primiparous mothers in terms of personal hygiene, newborn care, consultation and examination but has significant influence on the level of practice in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, psychological care and postnatal care; 10) Civil status has no significant influence on the level of practice of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise, rest and newborn care but has significant influence on the level of practice in terms of nutrition, personal hygiene, psychological care, consultation and examination and postnatal care; 11) Educational attainment has no significant influence on the level of practice of primaparous mothers in terms of personal hygiene, newborn care, psychological care, consultation and examination but has significant influence on the level of practice in terms of exercise, rest and nutrition and regarding postnatal care; 12) Employment status has no significant influence on the level of practice of primiparous mothers in terms of exercise and rest, personal hygiene, psychological care, consultation and examination and postnatal care but has significant influence on the level of practice in terms of nutrition and newborn care; 13) Monthly income has no significant influence on the level of practice of primiparous mothers in terms of personal hygiene, newborn care, consultation and examination but has significant influence on the level of practice in terms of exercise, rest and nutrition, psychological care and postnatal care; 14) The relationship between the level of knowledge and level of practice in terms of exercise and rest, nutrition, personal hygiene, psychological care and consultation and examination were significant but the relationship between the level of knowledge and level of practice in newborn care was not significant; 15) the relationship between the overall level of knowledge and the overall level of practice was significant and this result revealed that the higher the level of knowledge in postnatal care, the higher will the level of practice in postnatal care of the primiparous mothers will be and vice versa.
