Health related profession in the family and attitude towards the choice of nursing career among students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute

Abstract

The study utilized a descriptive quantitative design. A self-made questionnaire was pre-tested to 10 nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute Dssmarinas, Cavite to test its validity and reliability. The respondents of the study were the first year, second year and third year nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in the academic year of 2009-2010. The study obtained 50 respondents from each year level. There respondents were randomly chosen whether they have a family member who is/are in the health-related profession or not. The following statistical tools were utilized by the researchers to obtain valid results: Frequency, percentage, f-test and Chi-square test. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) Most of the nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute are female, eldest child in the family, belonged to the family income group of P250,000 and above, most of the nursing students have family member who are not in the heatlh-related field but have at least one family member in the heatlh-related field; 2) The study showed that the nursing students have high positive attitude towards their chosen career; 3) The study revealed that the choice of the career of the nursing students were not influenced by the family member in the health-related profession; 4) The effect of family health-related profession to the attitude towards the choice of career of the nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences institute when grouped according to gender, ordinal position, socio-economic status and with or without family members in the health-related field were the same.
