Abstract

The method used in the study is quantitative non-experimental descriptive type of research design. The respondents were composed of 150 Bachelor of Science in Nursing students batch 2009 from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute, which is approximately 40% of the total population. The sampling technique used in this study was convenience sampling. The research instrument used was a self-made checklist. The statistical treatment procedures used in this study to ensure a valid and reliable result of data were frequency distribution, mean, f-test and t-test. The study concluded that, 1) Most of the respondents are female, profess Catholic faith, eldest in the family, have a family income of P1001,001 and above, and took Emergency Room (ER) as nursing elective; 2) The respondents perceive that they are very competent in performing basic nursing procedures; 3) There is no significant difference in the perception of the respondents on their competence in performing basic nursing procedures when they are grouped according to gender, religion, birth order and nursing elective, white there is significant difference when grouped according to family monthly income.
