Abstract
The study utilized the non-experimental descriptive correlation type of research design. The population of respondents was 160 nursing students batch 2010 of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute. The researchers used the accidental sampling technique. The research instrument employed in the study was a three (3) part research questionnaire. The questionnaires were given to the respondents after submitting all the needed letters for the data gathering procedure. The researchers gathered the questionnaires and tabulated after due statistical treatment was done through percentage, mean, frequency, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, t-test and f-test. The study concluded that, 1) From the 160 total number of respondents, majority of the respondents came from Cavite, female, belongs to the monthly family income group of Php40,001 and above, and Catholic; 2) Among the 20 critical thinking skills, the three (3) highest means are the following: ‘drawing from personal experience’, followed by ‘examine the situation prior to drawing conclusion’, ‘defining problems in searching for necessary information where the knowledge and skills required for problem resolution are absent’, and ‘identify knowledge and skills needed to solve problems from previously acquired information’. The three (3) least means are the following: ‘ask for information not yet provided’, ‘identify unstated assumption’ and; 3) Among the 20 professional behaviors, the 3 highest means are the following: ‘encourages the client to utilize his own capacities’, followed by ‘uses the nursing practice in clinical experience’ and ‘uses interpersonal skills in communicating with co-students’. The three (3) lowest critical thinking skills are the following: ‘utilizes nursing theory as a basis for nursing care’, followed by ‘joins in school organizations’ and ‘exhibits creativity in planning of nursing care’ ; 4) The critical thinking skills of the nursing students batch 2010 had no significant difference when grouped according to place of origin, gender, socioeconomic status and religious affiliation. The results indicated that nursing students batch 2010 of DLSHSI are mainly from Cavite and other place, composed of male and female with different socioeconomic status, composed of Catholic and non-Catholic nursing students and have the same level of critical thinking skills; 5) The professional behavior of the nursing students batch 2010 had no significant difference when grouped according to place of origin, gender, socioeconomic status and religious affiliation. The result indicated that nursing students batch 2010 of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute are mainly from Cavite and other places, composed of male and female with different socioeconomic status, composed of Catholic and non-Catholic nursing students and have the same level of professional behavior; 6) The relationship between critical thinking skills and professional behavior of nursing students batch 2010 fo De La Salle Health Sciences Institute was significant. The result also revealed that high level of critical thinking skills will also mean high level of professional behavior.
