The effects of paternal absence on male adolescents' role identification and level of self-esteem

Abstract

The study utilized a non-experimental, descriptive type of research design. Using purposive sampling, the respondents of the study were male adolescents with an age range of 13 to 19 years old, with absentee father because of a need to work abroad or for other reasons, with a minimum paternal absence of six (6) months and more, and willingness to participate in the study. The tool used in this study was adapted and modified by researchers based on Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory, and was validated by three (3) selected professors from the College of Nursing. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of respondents ranged from ages 17 to 18 years old, belongs to a nuclear type of family structure, with a father working as an Overseas Filipino Worker and are living without their father for a duration of 6 to 11 months; 2) The respondents showed an overall average of 3.47 for group identity, which indicated that the male adolescents have high level group identity, an average of 3.26, which indicates that male adolescents have a high level of self identity; an average of 3.37, which indicates that male adolescents have a high gender identity, and; an average of 3.26 which indicates that male adolescents have a high emotional identity. Overall, the mean value is 3.34 which is interpreted as high. This implies that male adolescents living without their father have high level of role identification; 3) The respondents showed an overall average of 3.27 indicating that the male adolescents living without their father have a high level of self-esteem; 4) There is no significant difference on the effect of paternal absence to the role identification and level of self-esteem of male adolescents when they are grouped according to age, family structure, reasons of paternal absence and the duration of paternal absence.
